Race for the Top Spot at PepsiCo India: Kovoor and Kotecha in the Running

The imminent departure of Ahmed ElSheikh, current President and CEO of PepsiCo's India operations, has sparked speculation about his successor. As ElSheikh prepares to take on a global role later this year, the focus is on who will step into the leadership role in India. PepsiCo, known for its iconic brands like Pepsi, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lay's, and more, is considering potential candidates for the coveted position. Here's a glimpse of the two individuals making headlines as contenders for the top job.

George Kovoor: A PepsiCo Veteran with a Sustainability Focus

George Kovoor reentered the Indian landscape in 2022 after spending eighteen years in global markets. Currently serving as the Senior Vice President and General Manager, Beverages at PepsiCo India, Kovoor has a rich history with the company, spanning three decades and covering various roles across PepsiCo brands. He returned to India after his tenure as Senior VP at PepsiCo’s global headquarters in New York. Kovoor, a seasoned leader, holds responsibility for the company's long-term sustainability strategy in India.

In addition to his leadership roles, Kovoor is credited with spearheading PepsiCo's shift in creative advertising. In July 2022, he handed the creative advertising mandate to Leo Burnett, marking a strategic move for the company's marketing efforts.

Kovoor's commitment to sustainability aligns with the Indian Government's vision for a circular economy, reflecting his dedication to creating a positive value chain.

Jagrut Kotecha: Snacking Expert and Commercial Leader

Jagrut Kotecha, currently PepsiCo's Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for AMESA (Africa, Middle East, and South Asia regions), emerges as another strong contender. Kotecha boasts extensive experience in the snacks business, making him a frontrunner for the top role at PepsiCo India.

With a career spanning several decades, Kotecha has served in various capacities, including Vice President for PepsiCo India's snacking category in 2018. His leadership during this period contributed to the transformation of popular brands like Lay's and Kurkure to cater to Indian preferences. Kotecha was also instrumental in the launch of India-made Doritos in 2017.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Kotecha has played a key role in philanthropic initiatives. In April 2023, PepsiCo in Africa, Middle East, and South Asia partnered with the PepsiCo Foundation to launch the 'Filling Hearts Outside the Box' program, pledging over 3 million meals to people in need across multiple countries.

As the race heats up, the choice between Kovoor and Kotecha will significantly impact PepsiCo India's trajectory, with each candidate bringing a unique set of experiences and expertise to the table. The industry awaits the announcement of the new leader who will navigate the company through its next phase of growth.
